Startupr Insider: Rachel Mak on How Airwallex & Startupr Power Hong Kong’s Next Generation of SMEs

Is your setup and banking friction holding your business back from fast international growth? In 2026, launching and scaling a business cross-border shouldn’t mean drowning in bank paperwork, waiting weeks for account approval, or losing margin on hidden foreign exchange fees.

To help early-stage companies hit the ground running, Startupr has joined forces with Airwallex to deliver an integrated legal, corporate, and cross-border financial stack from day one. In this exclusive interview, Rachel, GTM Partnerships Manager at Airwallex, shares how early-stage founders can eliminate financial bottlenecks, build a future-proof money infrastructure, and scale globally without unnecessary overhead.

Plus, to celebrate this partnership, we are launching an exclusive Limited-Time Special Offer for Startupr clients to make your corporate setup effectively FREE. Read the full interview below to learn how to optimize your financial operations!

1. Rachel, as GTM Partnerships Manager, how do strategic partnerships with platforms like Startupr help Hong Kong SMEs scale globally in 2026

Partnerships like this work because they meet founders exactly when they need both pieces at once. Startupr handles the legal and corporate setup, and we bring the financial infrastructure that sits on top: Global Accounts, FX and Transfers, Corporate Cards Issuing, Payment Gateway and the accounting integrations founders need.

That way, a founder isn’t choosing between incorporating quickly and banking properly. They get a cross-border-ready finance stack from day one instead of building one themselves, product by product.

2. What is the biggest mistake you see young founders make when setting up their cross-border financial operations

The biggest mistake is sequencing. Founders spend months getting the product and the incorporation right, then treat financial setup as something to sort out later. By the time their first overseas invoice is due, they don’t have local currency accounts, they can’t see the real cost of FX, and nothing is connected to their books.

The other common mistake is focusing on one number, usually the headline FX rate, instead of looking at the whole stack. Transfer cost, settlement speed, card issuing, and accounting integration all add up. Founders who treat their financial setup as infrastructure rather than a chore tend to scale with far fewer fire drills.

3. Traditional banks often involve slow paperwork and high fees. What is Airwallex’s primary advantage for early-stage startups

It comes down to infrastructure-first onboarding. Traditional banks often ask for HK$50,000 or more as a minimum deposit, and it can take two to three business days or longer before an account is even live.

Airwallex has no setup fee and no minimum deposit, and most Hong Kong companies are transacting within 48 hours because the account isn’t a standalone banking product. It’s the entry point into the full platform: FX, payments, cards, and spend management, all live from day one.

Founders also get interbank-level FX rates rather than the spreads most banks build in, so the savings compound with every transaction, not just at setup.

4. We are currently promoting a US$99 discount alongside priority account opening (3–5 days) and zero fees on the first HK$100,000 in FX. How do these entry benefits help startups in their first year?

These are enablement benefits more than a simple discount. They’re built to get a founder’s full stack live and working as fast as possible.

Priority account opening means the account, cards, and payment rails are active before the first supplier invoice is due, so onboarding friction never turns into a cash flow problem. No FX charges for the first HK$100,000 in FX gives founders room to actually use the platform, testing a new market, paying a remote hire, trying out a new supplier, without early transaction costs eating into the runway.

It’s a joint commitment from Airwallex and partners like Startupr to support founders through the setup phase, not just at sign-up.

5. Airwallex calls itself a “Financial Operating System.” What does this mean in practice for a founder who just opened an account?

In product terms, it means the account is the entry point into a connected stack rather than a single tool. From one login, a founder can activate Global Accounts in major markets, FX and Transfers at interbank rates, Issuing for multi-currency corporate cards, Expense Management, and integrate connections into their accounting platform, all set up to work together from the start.

That’s really what the operating system idea means. Instead of managing a bank, an FX broker, a card issuer, and a bookkeeping sync as four separate relationships, it’s one platform where everything is already built to talk to each other.

6. With Airwallex’s strong presence in Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia), how easy is it for a Hong Kong business to expand into these markets?

Very easy, because expanding there is really just switching on a product rather than opening a new banking relationship. Airwallex holds local licences in both Singapore, which is one of our dual global headquarters, and in Malaysia.

So a Hong Kong business can activate local currency Global Accounts in those markets, collect from customers like a local business, and pay suppliers or staff through the same platform and the same login they already use at home. For founders, regional expansion becomes infrastructure they already have access to, not a separate licence or onboarding process they need to go find in each new market.

7. How do automated tools like multi-currency cards and Xero/Shopify integrations save time for busy founders?

They take manual admin and turn it into something that just runs on its own. Multi-currency issuing lets teams spend directly in the currency they’re billed in, so there’s no double conversion and no surprise foreign transaction fees, and spend controls are built in so founders get oversight without having to micromanage every purchase.

On the accounting side, our Xero bank feed is the most used integration among our Hong Kong customers. It automatically syncs multi-currency transactions into the ledger, which cuts down manual reconciliation and shortens month-end close.

Shopify and similar integrations do the same thing on the payments side, letting founders accept 20+ currencies without writing a line of code. It’s really product depth doing the work a founder would otherwise have to do by hand.

8. As fintech becomes more competitive, what is Airwallex’s main strategy to stay the top choice for high-growth businesses?

Our strategy is product depth and ecosystem reach, not competing on price alone. That means proprietary global infrastructure, a full product suite covering accounts, FX, cards, spend management, billing and yield, increasingly AI native automation, and partnerships that connect directly into the ERPs, eCommerce platforms, and tools businesses already use.

For a high-growth business, the real differentiator isn’t a slightly better FX rate. It’s having one partner that covers the whole financial stack and already works with the systems they’re running on.

9. On average, how much can a Hong Kong startup save annually on FX and fees by switching from a traditional bank to Airwallex?

It really depends on the business’s size, corridors, and transaction volume, so I wouldn’t give one blanket average. But the pattern across our Hong Kong customers is pretty consistent.

GreenPrice now saves a five-figure sum every month, almost six figures a year, by routing transfers through local rails that cost about HK$2 to 3 each. Linjer saved HK$78,000 within a few months of switching its FX and card setup to Airwallex. Love, Bonito saves around 25% on cross-border transfer fees, and Endowus has cut international transfer and FX costs by up to 90% using our platform.

Even earlier-stage startups tend to see meaningful five-figure HKD savings a year once they’re using the full stack.

10. Why is it important for Airwallex to actively build a community with local partners instead of just offering payment software?

Because the partnership and the product really can’t be separated. Most founders run into financial friction long before they even look at fintech platforms, usually while incorporating, raising money, or planning their first move into another market.

Working closely with partners like Startupr and other incorporation companies keeps us close to that moment. We hear directly what’s actually slowing founders down, and that feeds straight back into product and enablement decisions instead of us guessing from a roadmap.

The partner ecosystem is what keeps the product relevant. It’s not a marketing layer sitting on top of the software; it’s part of how the software actually gets built and improved.
